Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) at HSE University Moscow, Russia, invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in machine learning and data analysis methods to address challenges of data processing in natural sciences with a focus on particle physics, astrophysics, and material science.
Essential requirements
● Candidates must hold a recent PhD in the field of Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related areas awarded over the last 5 years by an internationally recognized university;
● Candidates are expected to have a verifiable background (3+ years of experience) in algorithm design, mathematical methods, data analysis, ability to learn new concepts/approaches, work in a team, conduct research;
● Fluent English as research and other activities are conducted in English. Knowledge of Russian is not required;
Desirable qualities
● Fluency with Python, deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), DevOps e.g., git, CI;
● Familiarity with black-box optimization techniques, generative model design, automated hypothesis checking;
● Familiarity with physics simulation frameworks like Pythia, GEANT;
● Physics background is a plus.
The position involves:
● The successful candidate will be given an opportunity to pursue research along the lines of LAMBDA research topics, including:
o Physics-informed data-driven algorithm design;
o A generative model for forward and inverse problem solution for big particle physics experiments including CERN LHCb, NICA MPD;
o Numerical and gradient-free methods for optimization of complicated experiment and detector design;
o Advanced methods for solving inverse problems for particle physics;
o Probabilistic programming for simulation-based inference.
● Work in close collaboration with profound research teams from Italy (The Sapienza, University of Bologna), Germany (TU Berlin), US (MIT), Switzerland (UNIGE, EPFL, UZH);
● Publication research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
● Participation in educational and outreach events of the Lab and other contributions to the Lab’s development;
● Teaching, which is encouraged, though not required.
Conditions
Appointments are initially made for one year with a possibility to extend up to 3 years, conditioned by the research performance.
