Postdoctoral Fellow in Neural and Cognitive Foundations of Language

The Centre for Language and Brain at the HSE University in Moscow, Russia, invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of Neural and Cognitive Foundations of Language.

Requirements

The general requirements for the postdoctoral fellowship positions are the following:

  • Candidates must hold a recent PhD in the field of Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Speech-Language Pathology, Computer Science or related areas which was awarded over the last 5 years or received before starting work at HSE in a relevant field by an internationally recognized university and has been assessed by external reviewers as having the potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals;
  • Candidates should have:

o  A strong backgroundand practical experience in neuroscience methods (EEG, iEEG, MEG, fMRI, DTI, TMS, TES, etc.) and/or experimental and field methods in linguistic research and/or machine learning methods for empirical research;
o  Ability to work in a team;
o  Excellent academic writing skills;
o  The potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals.

  • Fluent English is an obligatory condition as research and other activities are conducted in English. Knowledge of Russian is not required.


The position involves:

  • Working under the direct supervision of Dr. Olga Dragoy, the Director of the Centre for Language and Brain;
  • Participants are encouraged to pursue their own research along with working on the ongoing research projects of the Centre for Language and Brain. This is an open-topic position, so candidates are welcome to propose a research topic of their interest in the field of Neural and Cognitive Foundations of Language. Some areas of special interest include:

o  Neurolinguistic research on the mechanisms of language impairment in children and adults (post-stroke and post-surgical aphasia, developmental language disorders, etc.),
o  Cross-linguistic experimental research on universal and language-specific mechanisms of language processing,
o  Application of machine learning to predict clinical characteristics (e.g., dyslexia in children, depression in adults, risk of cognitive impairment in older adults) based on available speech, eye-tracking or neuroimaging data.

  • Writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with members of the Centre;
  • Participation in the events of the Centre and other contributions to the Centre’s development;
  • Public presentations of the candidate’s research to the academic community;
  • Some teaching and student supervision are encouraged, though not required.

 

Conditions

Appointments are made for one year. Postdoctoral fellows have high opportunity of renewal of the contract (no more than two times) in case of outstanding performance.

HSE University offers postdoctoral fellows a competitive salary, the standard medical insurance plan; a working space equipped with a computer and free Internet access at the University.

The Centre for Language and Brain offers access to various healthy (children, young and aging adults, bilingual speakers) and clinical populations (including patients with aphasia, epilepsy, and brain tumors) and equipment (128-channel scalp EEG, intracranial EEG, MRI scanners, high-speed eye-tracker, TMS, tDCS and tACS), available at HSE or through clinical partners. Access to bilingual speakers of typologically diverse languages is available through numerous collaborations in other regions and countries. The Centre is located in an historic area in the heart of Moscow.
