Postdoctoral Fellow in the Modern and/or Contemporary History of Iran

The Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies in Moscow, Russia, invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of the Modern and/or Contemporary History of Iran.

Requirements:

• Candidates must hold a recent PhD in the field of the Modern and/or Contemporary History of Iran or related areas which was awarded within the last 5 years or received before starting work at HSE in a relevant field by an internationally recognized university and has been assessed by external reviewers as having the potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals;
• Candidates should have a strong background in the Modern and Contemporary History of Iran, ability to conduct research in the relevant field and to do some teaching in Iranian and Turkic studies;
• Fluent English is an obligatory condition as teaching, research and other activities are conducted in English;
• Fluent Persian is an obligatory condition as it is expected to be used in research (e.g. reading of archival documents);
• Knowledge of other Oriental and/or Russian languages will be an asset;
• Some background in the Modern History of Russo-Iranian relations is required;
• Relevant experience will be an asset although not required.

The position involves:

• working under the direct supervision of the Director of the Institute Professor Ilya S. Smirnov as well as Deputy Director and Head of the CSMECCA Dr Denis V. Volkov;
• participants are encouraged to pursue their own research on any topic in the Modern and/or Contemporary History of Iran along with some teaching in Iranian and Turkic studies;  
• writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with the members of the CSMECCA on its projects;
• participation in the events of the Institute and other contribution to the development of CSMECCA;
• public presentations of candidate’s own research to the academic community.

Conditions

Appointments are made for one year. Postdoctoral fellows have high opportunity of renewal of the contract (no more than two times) in case of outstanding performance.
