About the Center of Sociology of Higher Education
Set up in 2011, the Center of Sociology of Higher Education is a vibrant platform for research in the field of Russian and international higher education. The center is academically oriented and focused on the following areas:
●      International comparative research of students’ experiences and trajectories;
●      Instructional design in Higher Education;
●      Models of postgraduate training organization and their effectiveness;
●      Scientific guidance of graduate students in Russian universities;

 We welcome candidates interested in the research agenda of the Center and suggest joining one of the ongoing projects:

1)     The longitudinal panel cohort study of Russian students, which is focused on the identification of students’ models of educational behavior. This study is based on mental models suggested by Fischman and Gardner. During four years we plan to assess students’ educational outcomes as well as their demographics, behavioral characteristics, etc. Additionally, to quantitative data we run a qualitative study, which includes semi-structured interviews with students. The project requires a researcher with strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.

2)     The project on the application of learning analytics to improve the instructional design of courses in LMS requires a researcher with a background in instructional design and learning analytics research, experimental research in education, and publications in these areas.

3)     The project focused on the factors of doctoral students’ success including motivation for embarking on doctoral programs, quality of supervision, pre-doctorate background, as well as financial, social, and academic support. The project is mostly based on data from several surveys of doctoral students and graduates at Russian universities and research institutes, however additional data of various kinds can be collected. The project requires a researcher with strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.  

Requirements

The general requirements for the postdoctoral fellowship positions are the following:
●    Candidates must hold a recent PhD degree in Sociology, Education, Psychology or related areas, which was awarded over the last 5 years or received before starting work at HSE University by an internationally recognized university and has been assessed by external reviewers as having the potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals;
●    The candidate must have a strong track record of successfully doing research within the areas the Center is focusing on.
●    Knowledge of Russian is not required as research and other activities are conducted in English. Therefore, fluent English is obligatory.

The position involves:
●    working under the direct supervision of Ivan Gruzdev (director of the Center);
●    participants are encouraged to work on research projects of the Center along with pursuing their own research;
●    writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with the members of the Center;
●    participation in the events of the Center and other contribution to the Center’s development;
●    public presentations of candidate’s own research to the academic community;
●    some teaching is encouraged, though not required;
●    place of work: Moscow, Russia.

Conditions

Appointments are made for one year. Postdoctoral fellows have high opportunity of renewal of the contract in case of outstanding performance.
