The Higher School of Economics, the Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the project 'Banking in Emerging Markets.' Academic supervisor is Maria Semenova, Research Fellow and Associate Professor at CInSt, HSE.

The focus of this project is on various aspects of banking in Russia and other emerging markets, as well as household financial decisions in these economies.  First of all we study the influence of banking system transparency on the market participants’ behavior, including price and quantity market discipline phenomenon (disciplining by depositors, by borrowers, by banks) and market structure. We also are interested in different aspects of the corporate governance in the banks in emerging markets, and its influence on the banks’ strategies, riskiness and profitability. Finally we’re focused on the households’ financial decisions and the influence of different institutional factors (like financial literacy, social networks and trust) on their choice.

The job requires pursuing participant’s own research as well as involvement in CInSt's research projects in the fields of banking and households’ financial behavior, both in empirical and theoretical fields. The postdoc fellow is expected to prepare at least one research paper (preferably in co-authorship with the CInSt researchers) ready to be submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal. Research-related teaching is also encouraged.

Research topics include:

  • Banking in Russia;
  • Institutional changes in banking: cross-country analysis;
  • Households’ financial strategies.

Required qualifications: a PhD degree in Economics or Finance from a recognized international institution by September 2014; PhD research topic close to the CInSt topics, strong empirical skills and interest in applied empirical research; proficiency in spoken and written English.
