Institutional Economics, Comparative Politics or Social & Legal Studies

Postdoctoral research positions. Deadline: April 1, 2015

The International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the fields of institutional economics, comparative politics or social & legal studies with a special focus on the legal community, the predatory and violent behavior of state agencies and collective action (especially, legal mobilization).

More than 20 years after the beginning of economic transition, the problem of the independence of courts, development of the legal community and estimation of the quality of law enforcement system remain critical issues for Russia. In 2014 researchers from ICSID surveyed 372 attorneys in 9 regions of Russia to examine the demand for collective action by attorneys and explore different ethical standards and attitudes toward the violations of client rights. Researchers from ICSID recently finished a representative survey of 3,300 attorneys in 35 regions of Russia. The survey was conducted on the basis of a formalized questionnaire distributed through regional branches of the Federal Chamber of Attorneys of Russia. Topics include the access and demand for attorneys with different specialization in Russian regions, lawyers’ estimations of the quality of work of different law enforcement agencies, professional ethics of attorneys and legal education, collective action in the legal profession, etc. Successful candidates for the post-doctoral position will participate in ongoing research at ICSID on these topics. Candidates whose research contains a comparative perspective or focuses on contexts other than Russia are also encouraged to apply. 

The position involves: 

  • working under the direct supervision of Andrei Yakovlev, director of ICSID
  • successful candidates are encouraged to pursue their own research in parallel with ongoing research at ICSID
  • writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with researchers at ICSID
  • some teaching as well as one or two public presentations of the candidate’s own research are also encouraged
  • participation in organization of events and other contributions to the development of ICSID
Requirements:
  • a PhD from an international research university in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Law, or Law and Economics
  • ability to work in a team
  • fluent English
  • knowledge of the Russian language is an asset, but is not required
