Student Social Networks, Peer Effects, and Academic Achievements

Postdoctoral research positions. Deadline: April 1, 2015

The Higher School of Economics, the Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the project “Student Social Networks, Peer Effects, and Academic Achievements”.

The focus of this project is on the impact of social networks on student academic achievements, their behavior, and life choices. We study the role of peer group effects in student achievements and decisions, network formation process in educational environments, and longitudinal dynamics of student social networks.

  • Topics of interest include but are not restricted to:
  • Peer effects transmission in online and offline networks;
  • Peer effects in different educational systems;
  • Social networks and student psychological traits;
  • Social networks and student academic achievements and dropouts;
  • Social networks and student decisions and behavior;
  • Network modeling and network analysis methods.

CInSt has access to several datasets which contain information on student present and previous achievements, socioeconomic background, psychological traits, behavior, and social offline and online networks. It is also possible to construct a new database on social networks related to research topic.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to pursue his/her research interests under the supervision of Maria Yudkevich, work in close collaboration with the center’s ongoing projects, and make no less than two presentations of the research before the affiliated center or laboratory, or a broader audience. Some teaching is also normally encouraged.

Required qualifications

We are looking for highly motivated and independently working researchers with interest in social networks research. Applicants should have a strong theoretical and empirical background in economics, sociology or psychology (a PhD degree in Economics/Sociology/Psychology from a recognized university). Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.

HSE offers a competitive salary, health insurance, and research-related travel support. The appointment is normally made for one year starting September 2015 with the possibility of extension in some cases.
