The research topic

Question Answering (QA) and Machine Reasoning (MR) have become a crucial application problem in evaluating the progress of AI systems in the realm of natural language processing and understanding and in measuring the progress of machine intelligence in general. However, most of the advances have focused on “shallow” QA tasks that can be tackled very effectively by existing retrieval-based techniques. Deep learning-based methods achieve a human-like performance on benchmark datasets; however, it is suspected that these methods merely learn to match answers to questions or focus attention on specific words and pieces of text and do not perform real reasoning or cognition.

Research projects aim to catalyze the progress on the complex QA systems using deep learning technologies.

Requirements

The general requirements for the postdoctoral fellowship positions are the following:

• Candidates must hold a recent PhD in the field of bioinformatics, computer science, machine learning or related areas which was awarded over the last 5 years or received before starting work at HSE in a relevant field by an internationally recognized university and has been assessed by external reviewers as having the potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals;
• Candidates should have experience with applied machine learning and should be able to work in a team and conduct their own research;
• Fluent English is an obligatory condition as research and other activities are conducted in English. Working language is English. Knowledge of Russian is not required.

The position involves:

• working under the direct supervision of Dr. Attila Kertesz-Farkas;
• conducting your own research project;
• supervising and managing research work of MSc, BSc, and PhD students;
• writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
• presenting your own research results to the academic community at international conferences.

Conditions

Appointments are normally made for one year. Postdoctoral fellows have an opportunity of renewal of the contract (no more than two times).
