Job Description

Contribution of Higher Education to Individuals and Society: a Comprehensive Accounting

The comprehensive research on contributions of higher education (CHE) was launched in 2018. The research is conducted under the leadership of Prof. Simon Marginson, Professor  of International Higher Education at the University of Oxford, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Higher Education, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Tsinghua Journal of Education.

The project will focus on a comprehensive accounting in which all of the many contributions of higher education (social, economic, cultural, political, subject-forming; systemic and institutional; local, national and global) can be considered – a framework that combines the measurable elements with those elements that can only be understood by using a process of complex synthetic judgment. This international project focuses on both conceptual development and empirical data. It will summarise what we know, and move forward to new ideas and insights, and identify what national systems have in common and also how they vary.

We welcome researchers with a strong motivation to contribute to conceptual development in the field of higher education, fostering innovative and critical theoretical approaches. The project involves working with a team of international researchers from different social science disciplines.

Requirements:

  • Strong background in theoretical and empirical work in at least one social science discipline,
  • Strong analytical skills and good writing skills,
  • Ability to carry out research to meet standards of high-ranked academic journals,
  • Interest in the subject of higher education,
  • Ability to work in a team.

The Job involves:

  • Conducting research at the research project in cooperation with international scholars aiming at book publication;
  • Elaboration of theoretical frameworks and empirical strategies for the research;
  • Publishing papers in peer-reviewed international academic journals,
  • Public presentations at conferences and workshops,
