Centre for Medieval Studies

The Higher School of Economics Centre for Medieval Studies in Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the field of medieval (Occidental, Byzantine or Russian) history.

 

The job involves:

·        working under the direct supervision of Professor Mikhail Boytsov

pursuing their own research in parallel with working on Centre for Medieval Studies’ main research project Symbolic behavior in the Middle Ages and early Modern Timein one of five broad areas:

 

    • a. Symbolic aggression in internal and external church conflicts
    • b. Symbolism in terms of kinship, mainly in Northern and Eastern Europe
    • c. Symbolic behavior and value system(s) in Italy from 900 to 1300.
    • d. Symbolic behavior in political ceremonies in Latin Europe from 1300 to 1500.

o   e. ‘Protonational’ in symbolic behavior of the elites of Muscovy, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and France from 1400 to 1700.

 

·        writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with the stuff members of the Centre

·        participating in research seminars, co-organizing events and contributing in other ways to the Centre’s development

·        presenting publicly candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community

·        participating in teaching is encouraged, though not required.

 

The Centre offers access to printed and electronic resources of the Higher School of Economics as well to collections of Moscow libraries.

 

Requirements:

·         a PhD from an international research university in such fields as: Medieval history, Byzantine history, Russian medieval history, as well as middle Latin or medieval vernacular philology, art history, history of sciences, history of philosophy and archeology (the PhD thesis shall have been defended successfully within the previous 3 years),

·         a strong background in historical methods and historiography, 

·        ability to work in a team,

·        fluent English,

·        relevant experience is an asset although not required
